Surprise Me! It's My Birthday!

Scripture

Matthew 7:11 (NKJV) ‘If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV) Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us

Surprise: an unexpected or astonishing event, fact, or thing. (Oxford Languages)

Devotion

Midnight strikes and suddenly I am a year older! Gratefulness floods my heart and I pray and thank God for allowing me to see another year! But as my prayer ends, my mind drifts off and I begin to think. What do I want this year? Then I shout “SURPRISE ME LORD!”

If we are honest, every birthday we have a list of things we want to accomplish, things we want, and where we see ourselves in the future. While planning and goal setting is essential, it can sometimes mess with God’s plan for our lives. If we have learned anything in 2020 it is that our lives are subject to change due to the unexpected. It can cause our plans and timelines to shift and leave us speechless or questioning what went wrong.

In this pandemic, I have realized that God wants us to plan and ask Him our hearts desires so that he can exceed what we ask or think. But if it does not happen how we envisioned it, we must leave room for God to surprise us! Think about the last time your mom or dad surprised you? Was it amazing? Did it exceed what you wanted to ask? Did it meet a need that you did not mention? If our parents can give amazing gifts and surprise us, imagine the surprises God have for us. Leave room for surprises! It may supersede what you have planned.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank you for the desires You have placed in our hearts. We are grateful for the plans and goals we have set. We trust that it will all work in our favor. Teach us to plan with You in mind. Remind us that we have to seek you in everything so that we are not frazzled when the unexpected come. Strengthen our faith so that we can welcome change and surprises from You! Thank you for another year! We are forever grateful

Amen
